Extension of the Salt wharehouse at Salinas de Janubio

In the Janubio Salinas, where Lanzarote’s saline landscape meets the Atlantic Ocean, architecture becomes a silent echo of nature. This extension project for the Salt wharehouse is a respectful dialogue between the old and the new, where tradition and modernity coexist in harmony without disturbing the serenity of a fragile, yet extraordinary protected landscape.

A Meeting Between the Past and Present

The original wharehouse, a witness to generations dedicated to salt extraction, remains intact, fully respected as a guardian of the past. The new intervention moves away from it, clearly marking its autonomy while allowing both to coexist without competing. This gesture creates a subtle contrast, where the memory of the old is honored while the extension, with its simple, refined volumes, offers a contemporary interpretation that looks towards the future.

The physical separation between the two constructions is an architectural whisper—a deliberate crack in the form of a courtyard that allows light and air from the environment to flow between them, reminding us that this landscape is not just built with stone but with the natural elements that surround it. Thus, the space between the old and the new becomes a line of respect and transition, a void that both unites and distinguishes.

Simple Geometry, Contemporary Spirit

The extension is defined by its formal simplicity, with geometric volumes inspired by the saline landscape and its shapes, but not imitating or subordinating to them. The island’s typical materials—with their rough textures and earthy colors—are reinterpreted here, creating a new skin for the cellar that, while rooted in tradition, speaks the language of modernity. The clean, minimalist lines allow the building to blend with its surroundings, without imposing itself but also without disappearing.

The rough, warm surfaces capture sunlight in a game of shadows that changes throughout the day, mimicking the unchanging cycle of the salt flats. The walls rise as a natural extension of the volcanic soil, establishing an intimate relationship with the land and wind, while large strategically placed windows frame the landscape, connecting the interior with the vastness outside.

An Architecture that Breathes the Landscape.

This project is not limited to expanding a warehouse; it is an intervention that celebrates the millennia-old activity of salt extraction while reinterpreting its workspace with a new, light, and contemporary image. The old warehouse remains the heart, but the new addition brings a freshness that breathes the essence of Lanzarote: a place of contrasts, where the sea and volcanic rock meet, where time seems to stand still, but modernity finds its own rhythm.

The architecture sits in this delicate balance between the natural and the built, aiming not only to integrate but also to honor the protected surroundings of Janubio, with an intervention that does not disturb the landscape but complements it with soft and essential gestures.

In its simplicity, the project offers a new image to this warehouse, which remains a workplace, but is now also an architectural testimony of respect, sensitivity, and renewal. A tribute to the land and the sea, it will continue to be part of the soul of Lanzarote for generations to come
